After winning the Hashido award in the 1967 Intercity Tournament, he joined the Whales. He won double-digit games 12 years in a row from 1969 onwards. With his sharp Kamisori shoot (razor breaking ball), he earned 51 of his 201 wins against Giants and was often described as a Giants killer.
