In 1955, he was Rookie of the Year with the Mainichi Orions. He was the league batting champion twice and the youngest to reach 2,000 hits. Nicknamed a "hit-making machine," he made enormous contributions to the team as a consistent batter among the Orions' "Missile Lineup" in the 1950s and '60s.
