In his second year with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in 1965, he notched his first win with a no-hit, no-run game. In 1968, he outdid himself by pitching a perfect game. In 1972, he pitched his third no-hitter, matching the feat of Eiji Sawamura and exceeding it by including a perfect game. In 1975, he led his team to its first pennant win in the Central League with the most victories (20) and most strikeouts (193), earning the Sawamura Award.
