The southpaw joined the Hiroshima Toyo Carp outside of the draft system in 1977 after playing rubber baseball for Izumo Credit Cooperative. He was active as a starter and a reliever. In 1988, he won the Sawamura Award for the best ERA (1.70). In 1991, he won the best reliever title with 6 wins and 26 saves. In 1997, he won his second ERA title (2.85). In his 22-year career, he played a major role in leading his team to five Central League pennants and three Japan Series titles.
