In 1972, the "Great Little Hitter" won the batting title in his second year with the Yakult Atoms. He hit above .300 for 12 straight seasons and ended his career with a .319 BA. In 1978, he was selected MVP of the Central League and led the Yakult Swallows to their first victory in the Japan Series.
