Joining the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in 1969, he led them to their first pennant in the C.L. in 1975 by hitting 30 home runs and batting .319, which won him the batting championship and MVP award. "Mr. Red Helmet" was home run king 4 times and hit 40-plus home runs for five consecutive years from 1977.
